Violin Sonata, Op. 59
(in four movements) played by Norbert Wethmar (violin)
Arthur Dulay (piano)
Vincent d'lndy's Violin Sonata was composed during the years 1903-4 and therefore represents the composer at the height of his powers. Its construction is similar to that of Franck's violin sonata ; that is to say, it is in cyclic form ; the thematic material of the four movements is derived from three separate motifs which are heard early in the first movement.

Twelve Studies, Op. 25 played by I so Elinson (piano)
A hundred years ago people hardly thought of a study as a piece for concert performance. A study, as its name implies, was a technical exercise. But what a magical significance it is given by Chopin, who brought about a minor revolution in music by proving that a technical exercise can be turned into a thing of beauty and a joy for ever !
In an essay on Chopin's Studies,
Op. 25, Mendelssohn said: ' They are all models of bold, indwelling, creative force, truly poetic creations, though not without small blots in their details, but, on the whole, striking and powerful.'
