In seventeenth-century London festivities in honour of St. Cecilia's Day were carried out on a sumptuous scale on November 22. The company foregathered at St. Bride's Church, where a service was performed by the most skilled musicians in the town and a.sermon preached in defence of cathedral music, lately suppressed under the Puritan regime. The assembly then repaired to Stationers' Hall to hear the new ode composed in St. Cecilia's honour, after which they sat down to a magnificent banquet.
It was for this august occasion that Purcell composed his finest of odes for St. Cecilia's day. The poem, by Nicholas Brady , Chaplain to the Queen, gave ample scope for his unrivalled gift of musical illustration.
