A symposium of short talks
In these days of unrest and change it is refreshing to come across people who, hidden in quiet corners of the Welsh countryside, still cling to their quaint crafts and old-fashioned ways of living. This afternoon you will hear how a water-diviner, a travelling saddler, a bird-watcher on an island sanctuary, and a broom-maker carry on with their unusual occupations.

A talk by Dr. Julius Grant
The technique of modern life depends largely on the keeping of accurate records, and this depends largely on preserving in legible condition certain pieces 'of paper. How can paper be protected from damage by war or decay ? Dr. Julius Grant , an expert on the scientific aspects of paper manufacture, has some fascinating tales to tell of this battle for the life of paper. Many listeners may remember his talk on tracing hook-forgers.

A radio play by Donald Bull
Produced by Laurence Gilliam
The scene is a small provincial town in Western Germany at the present time
The drama of this play, which is said to be based on fact, lies in the fact that the parents of a U-boat commander, doubtful of the official news that he is dead, hear from a London news broadcast in German, to which the are forbidden to listen under pain of death, that their son is alive.
What are they to do when the whole town is to join in a memorial service for the son they know to be alive ? That is only the beginning of this telling play which keeps its suspense to the final curtain.
