The scene is a small provincial town in Western Germany at the present time
The drama of this play, which is said to be based on fact, lies in the fact that the parents of a U-boat commander, doubtful of the official news that he is dead, hear from a London news broadcast in German, to which the are forbidden to listen under pain of death, that their son is alive.
What are they to do when the whole town is to join in a memorial service for the son they know to be alive ? That is only the beginning of this telling play which keeps its suspense to the final curtain.
