Exercises for men
The arrangements for 'Up in the Morning Early' have been altered for the rest of the summer, making it a kind of 'free-for-all', though in all probability it will return in the autumn to the former rigid division into special programmes for younger and older, men and women.
The new plan introduces a 'double-piano act', one pianist stressing the rhythm so necessary for those doing the exercises, the other playing an accompaniment that should provide pleasant early-morning listening for the lazier ones - or, more important, for those who must perforce 'stand by' during exercises that are unsuitable for them.

An ENSA concert for munition-workers, with Ella Retford, Bobbie Comber , and the Band of H.M. Welsh Guards (by permission of Colonel R. E. K. Leatham , D.S.O., commanding Welsh Guards), conducted by Lieut. T. S. Chandler , Director of Music, Welsh
Guards

A reading by Eric Gillett
Fanny Burney died one hundred years ago. She wrote a best-seller when she was twenty-five, and left one of the most entertaining diaries in the language. She knew well many of the most famous men of the day-there are amusing sidelights in the diary on Burke, Sheridan, Garrick, Boswell, Reynolds, and Johnson, and many more-and her account of Brussels during the Waterloo campaign makes particularly interesting reading today.
The diary and letters of Madame D'Arhlay (her married name) were published after her death in the years 1842-6.

plays the Fantasy in C, Op. 17, by Schumann Schumann 's Fantasy was composed in 1836 and is dedicated to Liszt. The poetic basis is described by Schumann himself in a letter to
Clara Wieck , who later became his wife : ' I have finished a Fantasy in three movements, which I sketched down to the details in June, 1836. I do not think I ever wrote anything more impassioned than the first movement ; it is a profound lament about you.'
