Margaret Maddison (piano)
The form of Cesar Franck's Symphonic Variations is novel in that the cyclic method of construction-an extension of Liszt's method of thematic transformation that Franck perfected and made his own-is here applied to the variation form. Although continuous, the music is divided into ten sections: introduction, statement of theme and six variations, interlude, and finale. The introduction is based on a typically Franckian melody heard on the piano at its first entry. It is used in the lovely interlude and again, together with the theme of the variations, in the brilliant and high-spirited finale.
Margaret Maddison
As a result of her successful trip to Canada and the States early last year Margaret Maddison was booked to cross the Atlantic again in the autumn and actually was to have sailed in the ill-fated Athenia in October. The outbreak of war saved her life.
She has broadcast already twice this year, has played at the National Gallery Midday Concerts, at a concert in Leeds, and in London with the British Women's Orchestra.
Bom at Kettering, she comes of a musical family. Her sisters, Janet and Joyce, play with Hope Timpson in the Maddison Trio and are well known to Midland listeners.

Constant Lambert 's Horoscope was written last year and was produced at Sadler's Wells in January. Its theme is the very ancient belief in the influence exerted on human beings by sun and moon in conjunction with the twelve divisions of the zodiac. The chief characters are a man and a woman. He has been born with the sun in Leo and the moon in Gemini ; her moon is also in Gemini, her sun in Virgo. In the words of the composer: The two opposed signs of Leo and Virgo ... struggle to keep the man and woman apart. It is by their mutual sign, the Gemini, that they are brought together and by the moon that they are finally united.'
Unfortunately owing to lack of time No. 3 Valse for the Gemini has had to be omitted.
Conducted by Malcolm Sargent
Rachmaninoff's Second Concerto was written in 1900 for the Royal Philharmonic Society of London. By many musicians it is considered his finest work. Certainly it is the most popular and has enjoyed continued success from its first performance.
