In 1916 the Japanese dancer, Michio Ito , produced a ballet at the London Coliseum, and Hoist wrote a number of short dance pieces specially for it. Ito furnished the composer with real Japanese themes, and all the pieces, except the third, are founded on these. The third has melodies of Hoist's own invention.
The numbers are: Prelude. 'The
Song of the Fisherman ' ; ' Ceremonial Dance ' : ' 'Dance of the Marionettes ' ; Interlude, Song of the Fisherman ' ; ' Dance under the Cherrv Tree' ; Finale. ' Dance of the Wolves'.

In the early days of the symphony, when it was in its experimental stage, the most important contemporary instrumental form was the serenade, from which the symphony is derived. Mozart's Serenade No. 9, in D major was completed at Salzburg in 1779 and was evidently written for some special occasion. Scored for two flutes, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, strings, and timpani, it is written on quite an elaborate scale: there are six movements, including a sinfonia concertante. which falls into two sections
