Tom Jenkins , a native of Neath, spent most of his 'teens taking part in piano competitions and Eisteddfodau, and won 185 prizes. When his piano teacher, who was also an organist at a large church at Neath, died, Tom took his place as organist at the age of seventeen. Eighteen months later he became organist and choirmaster, and assisted Dr. Hopkin Evans in forming the Neath Choral Society.
When the Cardiff Plaza opened,
Tom Jenkins was appointed musical director-a position he held from 1926 to 1931, when he became organist and manager of the Swansea Plaza.

Bizet's third concert suite, entitled ' Rome ', is in four movements: an andante first movement, followed by a vivacious movement, a slow third movement, and a bright finale with the sub-title ' Carnival '. In his book on the composer, D. C. Parker claims that ' the most interesting portions of the work are the scherzo and the carnival. The scherzo is founded on a vivacious theme to which the composer adheres faithfully throughout..... The carnival, an allegro vivacissimo, starts with a fussy little theme, accompanied by staccato chords ; it is soon displaced by a very Italian melody in thirds. These two subjects have more than a little of the true carnival spirit about them and seem to belong to the merry-making South. The second subject proper, ben sostenuto e cantabile, is of a more vigorous type, and not particularly Southern in its complexion. Its choice was probably dictated by the composer's desire to obtain the requisite variety.'

No composer has ever come within measurable distance of Mendelssohn's genius for making fairies come to life in music, except perhaps Berlioz. There is, outside the Midsummer Night's Dream music, a fairy-like quality in many of Mendelssohn s works, particularly in his capriccios and scherzos.
The famous Scherzo from the Midsummer Night's Dream is, notwithstanding the Overture, the most perfect piece of fairy music that Mendelssohn ever wrote.
