Debussy's Rhapsody was composed in 1909-10 for a public competition of the Ecole Nationale de Musique. A melodious but rather showy work, it was considered by Debussy himself to be ' one of the most pleasing pieces I have ever written ' ,
Some months after its first performance in 1910 Debussy arranged the piano part for orchestra and indicated that the solo part could be played by either clarinet or saxophone.
