A fantasy based on the Czechoslovakian author's observations of the strange ways of the English, as he recorded them in his ' Letters from England' (with acknowledgment to
Paul Selver 's translation) by Josef Schrich and John Midgley with Laidman Browne as Karel Capek and other parts played by Dora Gregory , Betty Hardy , Malcolm Graeme ,
Charles Mason , Bryan Powley
Production by Robert Kemp Czechoslovakia in particular, and the world of letters in general, suffered a severe loss in the death of Karel Capek last year. His wit, sincerity, and deeply patriotic love of his country made him an outstanding figure wherever he went, and of all his works none is probably more popular, or will last longer in this country, than his witty ' Letters from England '.
The script is a delightful fantasy, showing Capek arriving in England with conflicting ideas about the country and its people, but armed with a pair of magic spectacles that enable him to converse with trees, animals, houses, and so on.

Sir John Stainer , the organist and composer, was born on June 5, 1840. Though many of his compositions have not survived the acid test of time, his cantata, ' The Crucifixion ', still gains in popularity and is sung in churches of all denominations all over the English-speaking world. The anthem, ' I saw the Lord', represents his style at its loftiest and most dramatic, and is a worthy commemoration of him in this, his centenary year.

Once again the pages of I Scrapbook ' turn — for the fifty-third time. ' Scrapbooks ' started in 1933, since when they have dealt with twenty-two years between 1900 and 1930. Many of the programmes have been repeated, and also, in pre-war days, rebroadcast on different wavelengths.
' Scrapbook for 1903 ' was first broadcast in December, 1938, when John McCormack made his BBC début simultaneously with his retirement. Since he gave his farewell performance at the Albert Hall in 1938, however, John McCormack has come out of retirement, and is making a tour in aid of the Red Cross. He is broadcasting again this week in a special programme for the Forces on Tuesday.
