1/4. How have various religious faiths responded to the Boxing Day disaster of last year? This series, showing on consecutive nights, finds out.

On Thailand's southern coast, villagers who survived the tsunami are now battling developers intent on creating new tourist resorts. Can a Buddhist village armed only with a faith that has no god and no easy answers stymie the imposition?

Documentary: Tsunami Prayers 7.00pm BBC2
Like so many other Asian coastal villages, Laem Pom in southern Thailand was devastated by last year's tsunami. Fifty of its 150 residents died or are missing. This moving, uplifting film examines how the survivors are coping with the aftermath of such a tragedy - spiritually and practically.
Their practical problems are complicated by a dispute over the land's ownership, which means the government won't rebuild their homes. However, their Buddhist faith appears to give them extraordinary inner strength and the Buddhist belief in generosity to others means scores of ordinary Thais turn up to help with the rebuild. You can't help but be touched.
The other films in this series, shown throughout the week, visit locations in Sri Lanka, southern India and Malaysia to discover how religion has - or hasn't - helped those who survived. (Jane Rackham)

5/5. The Chinese government reckons as many as 40 million men will be permanent bachelors within 15 years, a consequence of the country's one-child-per-family dogma and the fact that unwanted daughters are often aborted or killed. Many men are desperate: Xin Hua, 24, travelled 860 miles across China to find work so as to attract a female; and women are being kidnapped to be sold as brides. Can family-planning officials convince that girls are as rewarding as boys?
