Built to commemorate victory in battle, Blenheim Palace became a battlefield itself. After the Duke of Marlborough vanquished Louis XIV's forces in 1704, the Oxfordshire palace was constructed in tribute to his saving Europe from French domination. But the project involved a troublesome quartet: Queen Anne, who held the purse strings; the Duke, keen for a national monument rather than a home; the Duchess, who wanted a house for her family; and architect Sir John Vanbrugh , more used to the stage than buildings.
