The world of Victorian crime and retribution comes under investigation as Adam Hart-Davis experiences life on the beat as an early policeman and looks at the forensic tests developed to catch poisoners. Hart-Davis also bravely volunteers to experience the life of the prisoner, from the horrors of the hand-crank to the monotony of prison food. Fear of crime led the Victorians to make home security a priority and door locks a vital requirement in every home.
