In July 1950 Brazil failed to become World Cup champions when they lost to Uruguay in front of a crowd of 175,000 in Rio. But it was the dawn of a golden age for Brazilian football, illuminated by such players as Pele and Garrincha. But while one was to become perhaps the world's greatest footballer, the other died in obscurity, aged just 49.
