Live coverage of this year's Super Cup match from Stade Louis II in Monaco (kickoff 7.45pm), as Uefa Cup holders Liverpool take on Champions' League winners Bayern Munich to decide the top club team in Europe.

Under the guidance of Gerard Houllier, Liverpool revived memories last season of their heyday as, during a silverware laden campaign, they preceded their heartstopping 5-4 win over Spanish side Alaves by picking up the Worthington and FA Cups. But their readiness for readmission to the European elite will be tested by a side that boasts goalkeeper Oliver Kahn and midfielder Stefan Effenberg, both German internationals, along with Owen Hargreaves - a young player who may become an England star of the future.

For many players on both sides, the encounter can be seen as a dress rehearsal for England's crucial World Cup qualifier in Munich against Germany on 1 September. Introduced by Gary Lineker, with comment and analysis from Alan Hansen and Mark Lawrenson.

Match of the Day Live - Super Cup 7.30pm BBC2
To be honest, the Uefa Super Cup isn't the kind of event to set the football world alight, which is presumably why it's on BBC2, where it takes up a good chunk of the night's peak-time viewing, and not BBC1. Still, it's bound to be required viewing for Liverpool fans, who will be keen to watch their team, the Uefa Cup holders, take on Bayern Munich, the winners of the Champions' League, at the Stade Louis II in Monaco.

Liverpool triumphed in three cup competitions last season when they added the Uefa Cup to the Worthington Cup and FA Cup. Their opponents lifted the Champions' League trophy in May. The match is something of a curtain-raiser for the much anticipated World Cup qualifier between England and Germany (which is a mere week away), as members of both tonight's teams will be renewing their acquaintances, in their countries' shirts.
