Simon Callow concludes a week of readings from Charles Dickens's books with a Christmas story that was immensely popular in the 1860s but is now almost unknown.
The tale of the good-hearted cheap-jack Dr Marigold is a rare piece of story-telling and is full of extraordinary changes of pitch and mood, a work which Callow considers "an astonishing masterpiece".
