Last year Artistic Director of the London Sinfonietta Michael Vyner died aged 46. This gala concert commemorates his work and marks the foundation of the Michael Vyner Trust, an organisation to help young composers.
The concert celebrates Vyner's wide taste with Ravel's Mother Goose Suite, Weill's Little Threepenny Music, Lutoslawski's Chain I and Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms. Between these masterpieces of the 20th century comes a whole series of new pieces specially written for this concert by Luciano Berio, Harrison Birtwistle, Peter Maxwell Davies, Henryk Gorecki, Hans Werner Henze, Oliver Knussen, Nigel Osborne and Toru Takemitsu.
The London Sinfonietta is conducted by David Atherton, Bernard Haitink, Oliver Knussen, Witold Lutoslawski, Simon Rattle and Esa-Pekka Salonen with soloists Paul Crossley, Nona Liddell and the London Sinfonetta Chorus.
Introduced by Michael Berkeley.
