The first of two programmes The Western Ocean Yachts
'They were lovely ships, the finest of all the merchant schooners. The grace of their hulls and the balance of their tall spars gave them a beauty which was never excelled in all the history of sailing ships.'
Aled Eames , sailor and historian, tells the story of the last trading schooners to be launched in Britain.
They were built - tiny and tough - at Porthmadog to carry slate to the Baltic, salt to Labrador and codfish to the Mediterranean and the islands of the Caribbean Sea.
Their crews were small, ill-fed and worse-paid, but they were also among the hardiest seamen on the Atlantic Ocean.
