Education is a great leveller, enabling the poor to raise themselves by sheer hard work, giving them the same chances as the rich, so that everybody has equal opportunity in pursuit of the fruits of learning. This is the way we like to see it.
In this programme filmed in Ghana, Ceylon and the UK, John Percival argues that the kind of education that has been promoted throughout the world perpetuates the distinction between rich and poor; that it gives the children of the rich a flying start and sentences the children of the poor to unemployment, discontent, alienation from their parents, and false expectations of the kind of life they can possibly achieve.
