Lancashire, champions of the Sunday League since its inception in 1969, today play Essex in a match which could prove vital to their hopes of retaining the title. Essex have proved themselves to be great exponents of the one-day game and are the pacemakers so far in the 1971 series.

Encased in ten tons of the latest technology, a group of scientists and journalists attempts to blast its way over 3,000 miles and half a continent-from the Republic of Senegal to Timbuctoo and beyond. The expedition's ultimate goal-the great Lake Tchad, a little-explored waterway the size of Wales, right in the heart of Africa.

The scientists are hoping that a study of the lake might provide some information which will help fight the problems of ecology at present facing the modern world. The technologists are hoping that their hovercraft will prove to be the ideal means of transport for such a rigorous journey. For, if successful, might not such machines bring untold benefits to a people for whom time stands still?

In retrospect the explorers have their doubts. For how can their blustering vehicle enhance a life-style which, though harsh and frugal still has the capacity for joy and the simple dignity of being alive?

Can your 12-year-old play the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto yet? Dr Shinichi Suzuki, the Japanese violin teacher, believes that we all start life with a musical potential which most of us fail to develop.

His pupils - some 15,000 have learnt by his method in Japan alone - start the violin at 2 or 3 years old and, with the help of their mothers, are encouraged to acquire their musical skill in the same way they acquire the skill of speech. The results, as this film shows, can be startling.

Suzuki is concerned with the whole education of human beings, not with training professional musicians. But at a time when first-rate violinists and teachers are in short supply, his ideas have an immediate practical value as well.
