An old tramp is found dead and there are signs that someone has tried to operate on his head. A youth disappears. The wife of Harry Gerwyn, a biochemist, suddenly goes into a coma that baffles the doctors... then Gerwyn's phone rings and the caller introduces himself as a Mr Foster. Politely he asks Gerwyn to visit him at a quiet suburban address. To all outward appearances Mr Foster and his sister are a perfectly ordinary retired couple, but they are in possession of scientific knowledge far in advance of Gerwyn.

Charlie Shavers is one of the great figures of the forties and fifties. He played trumpet with the John Kirby Sextet, then joined Dorsey for four years, ran a sextet with Terry Gibbs and Louis Bellson, and in 1953 joined Norman Granz's Jazz at the Phil, playing in London at the legendary JATP Concert that brought live American jazz to England for the first time in 20 years.
