Fifty-six years after the discovery of the South Pole, the Antarctic is being opened up by a new kind of exploration, made possible by modern technology. By far the biggest and most expensive research programme is the Americans. They call it "Operation Deep Freeze".

New Nobel Prize Winner Professor George Porter, F.R.S. Director of the Royal Institution, London demonstrates some of the fascinating scientific experiments used in his award-winning work.
The 1967 Nobel Prize for Chemistry has been jointly awarded to Professor Porter and two of his scientist colleagues for work on the phenomenal speeds of chemical change, where, in the tiniest part of a second, a whole new world appears 'as quick as a flash'.
During a special presentation, at the Royal Institution in London, Professor Porter revealed some of his dramatic experiments to his fellow members and their friends. BBC outside broadcast cameras were present on this privileged occasion. (Colour)
