Our changing view of the universe.

This programme explores the changing attitudes of science through two lectures, given more than a hundred years apart, on-the candle.
The first lecture was given by Michael Faraday 1791-1867 Fullerian Professor of Chemistry, Royal Institution, London.
There is no more open door by which you can enter into the study of natural philosophy than by considering the physical phenomena of a candle

The second lecture is given by George Porter born 1920 Professor of Chemistry, Sheffield University.
Look again at the candle in the light of what Faraday has told us... and the miraculous sequence of reactions which occurs in its flame. Surely it is now more fascinating than ever.
