New Orleans clarinettist George Lewis spearheaded the traditional jazz revival from 1942 until his death in 1969. Alyn Shipton is joined by Lewis's friend and protege Tom Sancton to select the highlights from a vast catalogue of recordings. Music includes recordings from works from Lewis's trio, quartet and Ragtime Band, and his collaborations with other jazz greats such as Lizzie Miles and DeDe Pierce. Derek Bailey , Evan Parker , Phil Minton and John Cage. His recent work includes regular performances with his "Futch" trio and an extended project playing fences around the world with his violin bow. Uitti is famed for her experimental approach to composition and improvisation, and, in particular, for her extended technique at the instrument, which she often plays with two bows at once.
