20/30. Haydn and the Esterhazys. Performances of the music James Naughtie mentions in his Radio 4 series. Employed by the hugely wealthy Esterhazy family, Joseph Haydn lived mainly in their isolated palace and produced music on demand. Of his prolific output, Haydn himself said: "I was cut off from the world and forced to become original."

Festival. The orchestra's associate guest conductor Stefan Solyom conducts a programme that opens with a recent work by Korean composer Si-Hyun Yi and ends with Sibelius's First Symphony. Alban Gerhardt is the soloist in a performance of Shostakovich's Cello Concerto.

Guitarist Pat Metheny came to fame the hard way, playing upwards of 300 gigs a year from the 1970s to the 1990s all over the United States with his own band. This week he joins Alyn Shipton to discuss his recordings and select some of the highlights, including not only his own groups, but also his work with Ornette Coleman , Charlie Haden , Jim Hall and many of the genre's other great names.

Freedom of the City Festival
Jez Nelson presents a selection from sets recorded in May at the Freedom of the City free improvisation festival in London. The event celebrates London's status as one of the leading centres of free improvisation worldwide, and boasts Evan Parker ,
Eddie Prevost and Martin Davidson as curators. The eclectic weekend featured performances from such established names as Paul Rutherford and Evan Parker , as well as lesser-known groups like Unit, whose approach blends traditional acoustic instruments with electronic processing, and the 14-piece outfit 9!, featuring the drumming of Eddie Prevost.
