Michael Berkeley 's guest today is the scientist
Professor James Lovelock , one of the foremost ideological leaders in the development of environmental awareness. He developed the Gaia theory, which regards the planet Earth as a self-regulated living being, capable of withstanding the assaults made on it by human activity, albeit with serious consequences for mankind. His love of music is a late passion that has blossomed since his second marriage and his choices today include Mozart, extracts from Verdi's Don Carlos and Wagner's Parsifal, a string quartet by Janacek, and Frank Sinatra singing Witchcraft.

The story of the biggest man-made explosion before to the atomic bomb, when a munitions ship and, ironically, a refugee relief vessel collided and Halifax, Nova Scotia , was devastated. Two thousand people were killed, many thousands were injured and the world was changed: this initiated the first global response to a disaster and the academic study of catastrophe. Sean Street visits the scene of the disaster and, 90 years on, meets Some Of the survivors. Producer Julian May

Russian Dreams
A journey to Russia, as summoned into existence by the imagination of poets and musicians: natives, exiles and foreigners. Music by a French composer, Tournemire, conjures up the bells of Moscow, and verses by Marina Tsvetaeva give a Russian literary slant on the same subject. Igor Stravinsky depicts his homeland from two perspectives - resident and emigre. With poems by Anna Akhmatova , Mikhail Lermontov , and Osip Mandelstam, and music by Borodin, John Field and Benny Goodman. EMAIL: wordsandmusic@bbc.co.uk
