1/5. Bad luck seemed to dog Carl Maria von Weber's professional life: there was always a rival faction, a temperamental diva or a political intrigue to complicate matters. In today's programme, Donald Macleod finds Weber working for the aristocratic and eccentric
Wurttemberg family, with whom Weber's own sense of mischief landed him in hot water. Overture: Ruler of the Spirits

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London. Continuing this year's Proms nautical theme, Wagner's musical depiction of a storm-tossed sea provides a tempestuous contrast with the sunrise opening of Strauss's tone poem. And Emanuel Ax is the soloist in Beethoven's grandiose and lyrical Third Piano Concerto. Presented by Louise Fryer.
