Egypt, 48 BC. At this point in his quest for power, Julius Caesar stands firm against the rapacious and fickle Ptolemy but weakens for the wily charms of Cleopatra. Sarah Connolly heads an international cast in this semi-staged performance based on a new production by David McVicar for Glyndebourne Festival, which sees the sparkling combination of William Christie and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment return to the Proms.
