John Dowland : the Man and the Myth
Dowland was one of the greatest musicians of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, and information about his life is plentiful. Yet the truth about his life is still shrouded in mystery. Lucie Skeaping explores the life and music of this enigmatic composer, and Catherine Bott talks to Dr Helen Hackett about the life and poetry of one of the ladies of the time, Lady Mary Wroth.

Don Carlo , heir to the Spanish throne, has been promised to Elisabeth, daughter of the King of France, to promote peace between the two nations. They meet and fall in love, but it's then decided that Elisabeth should marry Carlo's father, Philip II of Spain, instead. Verdi's epic opera contains some of his most dramatic and memorable music, and is sung by a top cast including Sondra Radvanovsky , Violeta Urmana and Richard Margison. Friedrich von Schiller, philosopher, lyric poet, playwright, idealist and revolutionary, on whose dramatic poem the libretto of tonight's opera is based, died 200 years ago.
