Orchestras - Who Needs Them?
Norman Lebrecht chairs another provocative debate. The symphony orchestra is facing its greatest crisis: American ones are running deficits and facing wage strikes; in Europe the radio orchestra is on the brink of extinction; while in Britain orchestras are required to be social workers, prison visitors and remedial teachers. Should we scrap some orchestras? Is there a moral case to be made for sustaining the orchestra, beyond that of procuring employment for fine musicians?
