1/5. Beethoven first established his name not as a composer but as a pianist and, above all, as a phenomenal improviser. Atthetime, the piano was still a relatively new instrument and keyboard players were experimenting with new techniques. Beethoven decided upon the hand position that is generally used today and passed on his ideas and skills to his pupils. Presented by Donald Macleod.
