Lee Morgan
Julian Joseph introduces recordings by the hard bop trumpeter whose career began in the big band of Dizzy Gillespie in 1956. The following year Lee Morgan appeared on John Coltrane 's classic album Blue Train and by 1958 had joined Art Blakey 's Jazz
Messengers. Morgan achieved commercial success in 1964 with the release of The
Sidewinder, the title track of one of Blue Note's bestselling albums to this day.

Simon Fell
This week's show is given over to the broadcast debut of Thirteen Rectangles by Simon H Fell. Inspired by the painting of the same name by Kandinsky, the piece combines written passages with sequences of improvisation. It is performed in session by the Simon Fell Quintet, with Gail Brand on trombone, Alex Ward on clarinet, Alex Maguire on piano, Steve Noble on percussion and the composer on bass.
