1: The Conductor. In the first of two programmes from the BBC archive,
Stephen Johnson presents recordings from the sixties and seventies of Britten conducting the English Chamber
Orchestra in works by other composers, including Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture, Haydn's Symphony No 95 in C minor, and Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet.

Paul Guinery introduces a sequence of English choral music reflecting the tastes and enthusiasms of Benjamin Britten.
Britten remained a life-long champion of the music of his first teacher, Frank Bridge , and the choral works of Gustav Hoist were a potent influence on his own choral music. The programme includes extracts from
