Michael Berkeley meets Sir Roger Penrose , the distinguished mathematician and physicist who has been described as "one of the greatest living disciples of Albert Einstein ". He laid the foundations forthe modern theory of black holes in space and invented the Penrose Tiles, which can cover an infinite plane without ever repeating theirpattern. He is particularly drawn to the musical architecture of Bach, whose music dominates his choices today, alongside works by Mozart, Schubert, Janacek and Stravinsky. Live from St David 's Hall in Cardiff, the final of this year's Cardiff Singer of the World competition brings a week of triumphs and disappointments to its exciting conclusion. The evening's events are introduced by Petroc Trelawny and expert commentary is provided by Humphrey Burton and lain Burnside. Five singers from the original 25 take part in the concert and tonight they are accompanied by the BBC National
Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Richard Hickox and Richard Armstrong , with piano accompanists Ingrid Surgenorand Phillip Thomas. The distinguished panel of judges includes Joan Sutherland , Marilyn Home and Gundula Janowitz , and is chaired by Anthony Freud , general director of Welsh National Opera.
