Private Passions

on BBC Radio 3

Michael Berkeley meets Sir Roger Penrose , the distinguished mathematician and physicist who has been described as "one of the greatest living disciples of Albert Einstein ". He laid the foundations forthe modern theory of black holes in space and invented the Penrose Tiles, which can cover an infinite plane without ever repeating theirpattern. He is particularly drawn to the musical architecture of Bach, whose music dominates his choices today, alongside works by Mozart, Schubert, Janacek and Stravinsky.
