A performance of Mahler's third symphony given on Sunday evening at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen steps in as a replacement for Bernard Haitink, who was originally to have conducted this concert. Mahler's great third symphony is something of a speciality for Salonen, whose reading of the work has brought him great acclaim. A review of a recent recording of the symphony with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, which also featured tonight's soloist Anna Larsson, says that Salonen "is at his best in long emotionally-wrought sections where he can accumulate power and swell Mahler's grand arch." In its six movements the symphony explores man's relationship with the natural world - the flowers of the meadow, the creatures of the forest, morning bells and finally - love.
