2: Opera
Monteverdi started writing dramatic works early in his career at the opulent court of the Gonzaga family in Mantua. He made an impressive operatic debut with Orfeo in 1607 and quickly followed this up with another full-length opera, Ariadne. By the time Monteverdi had moved to take up an appointment at the basilica of St Mark's in Venice, opera was firmly established as a popular entertainment in Italy. In his seventies, Monteverdi returned to the genre with an opera which displays all his dramatic talents, II Ritornod Ulisse.
