5: Eyot Island, Weybridge. Donald Macleod visits Richard D'Oyly Carte's private island on the River Thames west of London - the area which was often Sullivan's summer retreat in the last decade of his life. At
Weybridge Sullivan composed much of the music for The Gondoliers, Utopia Ltd and The Grand Duke, as well as for other light operas like The Emerald Isle; and, in 1890, his long-awaited first grand opera, Ivanhoe. Today's programme also features highlights from Sullivan's incidental music for The Merchant of Venice and his ballet
Victoria and Merrie England, and ends with his most (in)famous song, The Lost Chord.
