Donald Macleod traces the roots of Sullivan's stage career- and the famous "G&S" partnership. The music features highlights from the first six of Sullivan's 14 collaborations with W.S. Gilbert, starting in 1871 with the little-known Thespis and rising through Trial by Jury and The Sorcerer to their first triumphs with HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and Patience. Plus highlights from Sullivan's incidental music for Henry Irving's Lyceum productions of King Arthur and Macbeth.
