After the death of his son Alfonsino and the break down of his marriage to Leonora d'Este, Gesualdo locked himself away in his castle. 4: The English and the Irish
On the 50th anniversary of Shaw's death, Humphrey Carpenter explores Shaw's identity. He grew up in Dublin but moved to London as a young man and became more English than the English themselves. He was a great friend of Elgar, but a critic of Stanford, and described the success of his Irish Symphony as "somewhat scandalous".
