Michael Berkeley's guest today is cartoonist Posy Simmonds, whose minutely observed reflections of contemporary middle-class mores in the characters of the Weber family delighted readers of The Guardian during the Thatcher era. Her most recent creation, The Late Gemma Bovery (inspired by Flaubert), appeared first in serial form and then as a book. Her musical choices include keyboard music by Bach, Haydn and Schubert, instrumental works by Handel, Brahms and Hilda Paredes, and an excerpt from the soundtrack to the film Paris, Texas.

Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operetta Iolanthe (or The Peer and the Peri) remains as satirical about politics and the law today as it was in 1900. It charts the fortunes of Strephon, son of a mortal father and the fairy Iolanthe, as he outwits the entire House of Lords in pursuit of the fair shepherdess Phyllis.
