Verity Sharp introduces a performance of Where the Rivers Meet given by the Grand Union Orchestra last month at Sadler's
Wells and talks to the composer and director Tony Haynes. The Grand Union Orchestra draws on highly individual professional and amateur musicians from many cultures - ranging from the Caribbean to China, Turkey to India -each steeped in their own traditions, but who nevertheless unite and share their skills in a fusion and celebration of musical styles. Where the Rivers Meet explores the idea of migrants, exiles and refugees flowing through a cosmopolitan city, adopting and enriching the culture as they find a temporary or permanent home.
