Patrick Wright reports on the refurbishment of Somerset House, where vaults once filled with thousands of birth and death certificates have been transformed to house the gold, silver and mosaics of the Gilbert Collection. Will Somerset House, object of controversy and campaigning over its future for more than two decades, now be recognised as one of the great buildings of the capital? Plus a review of the world premiere of young Scottish playwright David Grieg's new play Victoria. Set between 1936-96, it is an ambitious exploration of the shifting political and social fabric of Britain.
