After returning to Vienna from a comprehensive tour as a piano virtuoso, Hummel became a pupil of Haydn and a friend and rival of Beethoven. He established himself as a teacher and eventually succeeded Haydn as kapellmeister to the Esterhazy family.

On the first night of a new Royal Opera House production of Martinu's The Greek Passion, Sean Rafferty talks to its director, David Pountney, about this powerful 20th-century drama.
