Neil Corcoran re-examines the work and reputation of Anglo-Irish novelist and short story writer Elizabeth Bowen. She was eclipsed by the first great modernist generation and frequently denounced as elitist, but Corcoran argues that her work reflects the anxieties of cultural identity, rootlessness and displacement which are at the heart of modern literature.
