In this live broadcast, the Royal Opera plays host to Karl Ernst and Ursei Hermann's production of Mozart's last opera, La Clemenza di Tito, first seen at the 1992 Salzburg Festival. For his stage swansong, composed to an imperial commission,

Mozart returned to his roots in 18th-century opera seria. The libretto by Metastasio explores 18th-century notions of imperial rule, as the liberal Emperor Tito follows his generous instincts and grants clemency to his friends. Presented by James Naughtie.
