I Beethoven Symphonies. Four programmes this week remembering the great conductor John Barbirolli.

The oboist Evelyn Rothwell first met John Barbirolli in 1931. She was 20 and he was auditioning her for a job. By the end of the decade, he was principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic and she was his wife.

A new performing version of After the Ball, Noel Coward's operette based on Oscar Wilde's Lady Windemere's Fan, recorded earlier this year at London's Peacock theatre as part of the BOC Covent Garden Festival. The music has been painstakingly restored by John McGlinn.
