1999 Salzburg Festival
The world premiere staging of Luciano Berio 's new "musical action", specially created for the unique space of Salzburg's
Felsenreitschule to launch the 1999 Salzburg Festival. Inspired by the venue's stone wall - three tiers of arches cut into a mountainside - this music theatre work explores the image of a wall in human perception: as a home, as a barrier, as a manifestation of hubris and as a symbol of power.
Hildegard Behrens leads a large cast of singers and players, many of them concealed within the galleries of the wall itself.
