Jez Nelson presents highlights from two of the 60 or so concerts recorded to date for
Jazz on 3, featuring two artists from opposite sides of the improvising tradition: Louis Sclavis and Nils Petter Molvaer.
Electric and acoustic musics have been parallel interests for Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer, who has worked alongside contemporary jazz artists such as Elvin Jones, George Russell and Gary Peacock as well as with leading
Scandinavian improvisers. Molvaer's abiding interest in improvisation in all its manifestations, together with a harder sound and heavier beat, produced the album Khmer- a beguiling hybrid of jazz, rock and ambient textures. The second edited concert features a European trio who represented the Vagues Nouvelles at last year's London Jazz Festival.
Frenchmen Louis Sclavis and Henri Texier, respectively on reeds and bass, and Italian drummer Aldo Romano share a background in the European improvising scene and combine to produce a set that is both eclectic and lyrical.
