Humphrey Carpenter marks the centenary of the birth of Alfred Hitchcock with an appreciation of the contribution made to his films by the musical soundtracks. Other music includes Lilly's orchestral suite Le Temple de la Paix, written in 1685, and Schumann's Konzertstuck, Op 134, performed by Murray Perahia with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Claudio Abbado.

The new Finnish conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra makes his Proms debut this evening. Sakari Oramo is a keen champion of the works of Nielsen, whose Fourth Symphony, the Inextinguishable, is performed after the interval. He is joined by a young star violinist for Sibelius's exultant and heart-rending concerto, and revives Bridge's epic tone poem, first performed at the Proms under Henry Wood in 1912.

And there were be-boppers like Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, trained in the band era, for whom it was natural to fuse the old big band style with the new musical language they had created.
