The fourth of eight programmes in which prominent pianists discuss the interpretation of a composer's solo piano music with reference to recordings by great interpreters of the past. Today Andrew Green talks to Canadian pianist Louis Lortie about playing Schumann. The programme includes recordings by Lortie himself, as well as performances by Wilhelm Kempff , Claudio Arrau , Alfred Cortot and Gyorgy Cziffra.

Humphrey Carpenter 's guests tonight include uilleann piper Liam O'Flynn. Other music includes Uszt's arrangement for piano and orchestra of Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy played by Jorge Bolet with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor Georg Solti , and Mendelssohn's great hymn Hear My Prayer.

The first of this evening's Proms from the Royal Albert Hall celebrates the 50th anniversaries of the founding of the London Mozart Players and the death of Richard Strauss. The programme includes a flute concerto by Lowell Liebermann, one of the three great last symphonies by Mozart, and Strauss's elegiac Metamorphosen, which surveys the ruins of postwar Europe.

Tonight's late-night Prom celebrates the rich cultural tradition of Irish music. One of Ireland's leading instrumentalists, virtuoso Liam O'Flynn, brings the sound of the uilleann pipes to the Proms. Plus the atmospheric serenity and theatrical presentation of choral group Anuna, who shot to fame in the original Riverdance show.
